The Rant-Tuesdays Poetry in Motion- Herstory

She is the strength to everyone's back bone, and dynamic in her own right. She keeps a smile on her face even when the world is trying to snuff out her light. No one knows who she is, nor do they know how hard she had to fight, to keep her family together in a society where the color of her skin is a reason to take flight.

Just about 5 feet tall, she never felt the need to back away from a fight, having the strength of two men, caused her opponents to act stupidly because of her height, but they didn't know her story, nor did they understand her plight. She was a target in their eyes, so they did things to her out of spite, but she continued to smile knowing she could hold her head up high because, through it all, she raised her family right.

She read her kids bedtime stories about the slaves who came before her, the ones who carried the added pain, as they ran through the night to catch the midnight trains, slipping and sliding through the rain, as they ran to glory. Knowing they couldn't stop because the masters were already counting inventory.

In the end, no one knew her name, nor did they know what she looked like. She carried the burden of more than one person as she would flee in the darkest of nights. She was a collective of bodies, like a protest being sought after, but they were too far out of sight. She carried us to freedom using the light of the stars, as she trodden through the mud, praying to God, that this would be her last night to recite the words that gave her the power to transcend heights.
